Though many are looking for a quick fix, to lose weight you're going to have to combine exercise with watching your diet. There are definitely ways to make this easier, though. Some exercise programs, for example, are quick and easy to do, while others may be more fun for you. You can find diets that strictly limit the amount or types of foods that you can eat, but there's definitely a program that will work for you.

For many, finding the right diet to follow is the biggest challenge. On one hand, you may know that you will have to limit the food that you eat to drop the pounds, but the call of your favorite junk food is too much to bear. You have to find the right balance.

Here are some of the most popular diets to follow. Think about these and see which ones fit with you and your lifestyle:

  • Calorie-counting diets. In a calorie counting plan, you are allowed to eat anything that you want--including dessert, chips or cookies--as long as it fits within a certain calorie range. If you fill up on high calorie foods, though, you'll be hungry all the time, since foods like a candy bar don't give you the energy that you need. To make a plan like this work, you need to eat a variety of low calorie foods that fill you up and limit--but enjoy--high calorie treats.
  • Low carb diets. In a low carb diet, you count the number of carbs that you eat instead of calories. Doing this can help your body to burn fat instead of sugars. Most doctors feel that the main reason that this type of diet works, though is because people limit the number of calories they eat.
  • Vegetarian, vegan, or raw diets. In these types of diets, you focus your diet on healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and nuts. Vegetarians don't eat meat, but vegans don't eat any animal products at all. Those who follow a raw diet choose to eat primarily raw foods.
  • Varied diets. Some diets combine all of the methods, allowing you to eat whatever you want without thinking about calories one day, while restricting the foods that you eat on another day.

All diets will work if you follow them. You should expect to lose about a pound or two per week.

Exercise to Lose Weight

A solid exercise program helps you to burn calories and increase your metabolism. Again, all exercise programs work to some extent, but you need to find something that works with you.

Here are some of the best options:

  • Going outside. You don't need to spend any money to get a good workout. You can get your exercise by going outside and going for a walk, a jog or a bicycle ride. Jogging will burn the most calories, but if you're just starting out, you should work your way up to it, alternating jogging with running.
  • Gym. If you have the money, a gym membership could be well worth it. Gyms have a variety of equipment that allows you to burn calories and build muscle. You can easily change your workout routine every day.
  • High Intensity Interval Training. If you don't have a lot of time, look to high intensity interval training (HIIT). This program requires just a few hours each week to be successful and focuses on both losing weight and building muscle.
  • Classes. Exercise classes allow you to bond with others who are also trying to get fit. You can do them at your local gym. Sometimes, community centers offer group classes that you can pay on an as-you-go basis. Look for something that interests you. Zumba is a popular choice, but you should also consider yoga, aerobics or dance.
  • Videos. If you want to workout in the comfort of your own home, purchase resistance bands and some videos that you can use to follow along. Again, look for ones that interest you. You can find videos that use dance or fun music to keep you motivated.
